Gulf Capital and Islamic Finance: The Rise of the New Global Players

Gulf Capital and Islamic Finance: The Rise of the New Global Players Review

Advance Praise for Gulf Capital & Islamic Finance

"With the region's increasing prominence in global capital markets, this timely piece is essential for anyone trying to gather a nuanced understanding of the landscape of Gulf capital and the fast-growing Islamic finance industry and the increased 'Shariah-affinity' of its stakeholders. Brilliantly written and easy to read, Aamir Rehman has leveraged a luminous career as a corporate strategist for the Middle East to put together the comprehensive guide to Gulf capital and Islamic finance." -- S. Nazim Ali, Director, Islamic Finance Project, Harvard Law School

"Aamir Rehman has written a lucid and well-researched guide to tapping capital in the Gulf. He is right that appreciating the underpinnings of Shariah-compliant finance is key to understanding the mindset of Muslim investors." -- Samuel L. Hayes III, Jacob Schiff Professor of Investment Banking, Emeritus, Harvard Business School

"A timely and useful book on the growing relevance to the global economy of Gulf capital and Islamic finance. Aamir Rehman's deep knowledge, passion, and engagement with the topic have come together in a book that provides insight and practical advice on how to tap into a rapidly growing source of capital. This book will help institutions navigate their way successfully through the growing Islamic finance industry." -- Iqbal Khan, CEO, Fajr Capital, and former founding CEO, HSBC Amanah

"If you want to understand the meaning and implications of Islamic finance, Aamir Rehman's Gulf Capital and Islamic Finance is the one volume you need on your desk. Written primarily for financial investment professionals with a need to know more about the impact on global markets of GCC investments and Islamic finance, Rehman's newest book makes this formerly ecoteric topic accessible to anyone with an interest in the increasingly important energy-rich Gulf countries." -- Michael W. S. Ryan, Ph.D., Senior Vice President, Middle East Institute, and former VP for Administration and Finance, Millennium Challenge Corporation

The six countries comprising the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)--Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman--have emerged as a vital source of stable capital and investments that will help power global economics in the coming decades.

In Gulf Capital and Islamic Finance, Aamir A. Rehman, the acclaimed author of Dubai & Co.: Global Strategies for Doing Business in the Gulf States, sheds welcome light on the hows and whys of trillions of dollars of Gulf capital, and Shariah-compliant finance--a fast-growing sector that Standard & Poor's values at 0 billion. In addition to incisive analysis of these dynamic, often unfamiliar markets, Rehman examines this sector's growth potential and investment opportunities.

Clearly written, brilliantly reasoned, and refreshingly free from geopolitical biases, this book is an excellent resource for professionals seeking to understand Gulf investments, Islamic finance, and their impact on global markets. Inside, you'll find in-depth knowledge on a host of vital topics, including:

  • Background and context on the rise of Gulf capital and Islamic finance: their origins, evolution to date, and current landscape
  • Descriptions of key GCC institutional investors such as sovereign wealth funds, specialist investment vehicles, and private investors
  • Global implications of the rise of these new players--what it means for investors, bankers, regulators, and international markets
  • The role of Gulf capital and Islamic finance in an emerging, multipolar world--and whether they should be seen as opportunities or threats

Involvement with Gulf-based investors in international markets is already bearing financial and strategic fruit for savvy global firms, as well as influencing reform in the GCC region. The flow of capital in and out of Shariah-compliant sectors presents tremendous opportunities for those who understand--and are prepared to meet--the aspirations and needs of these investors. Gulf Capital and Islamic Finance provides these firms and professionals with in-depth knowledge that builds a solid platform for dealing with businesses in a region that is assuming a broader role in the global economy.

Personal Finance: Strategic Default; Is It Just a Business Decision?

Personal Finance: Strategic Default; Is It Just a Business Decision? Review

On February 19, 2009, CNBC commentator Rick Santelli expressed his famous rant. This rant essentially expressed the feelings of those who pay their bills, pay their house notes, and stay out of debt. This book discusses Strategic Default, walking away from a mortgage note, in the light of this Tea Party understanding.

With the formation of the Tea Party, admittedly because of the Santelli rant, a movement to return America to her roots of personal responsibility was born. Santelli had said that those who made a bet on the housing ponzi and lost should not be bailed out. Many took his rant to mean that the losers should man up and pay off their mortgages. This book does not make a case for whether the mortgage "deadbeats" should be bailed out.

But there are other issues regarding the actions of those who can afford to pay their mortgages yet walk away from homes that are worth far less than the value of the mortgage. This book looks at what many call a business decision in the light of what is moral, even what is patriotic. But unlike Santelli, this book looks at the role of the Federal Reserve Bank and the role of the financial elite in the formulation of the ponzi housing bubble.

It is impossible to make a moral or patriotic decision regarding walking away from a house you can afford without understanding the nature of the housing bubble and the nature of securitization as a means for handling mortgages in our country, both in the past and in the future. Understanding the nature of the Fed and of securitization will go a long way toward determining morality and patriotism post bubble.

Financial Landscapes: Finance and Accounting Made Simpler

Financial Landscapes: Finance and Accounting Made Simpler Review

Financial Landscapes, Accounting and Finance Made Simpler is a short, practical book with concise descriptions and definitions of basic (and a few not so basic) finance and accounting concepts. Most of us do not have the time, inclination or expertise needed to adequately monitor our finances. And when we look for help quite often we are overwhelmed with terminology we don't understand. This book provides enough information so the reader will not be overwhelmed by the terminology and descriptions used by today's financial press. The book is broken into two parts: the concepts needed for the long term and the basics, descriptions of specific financial products or elements. Written with as much humor as appropriate, and without the minutia, the focus is on providing the information which an individual might need to comfortably talk to an accountant, broker or other financial advisor. Bob Burson has worked in the accounting field for over thirty years. He has a master's degree in finance and is a partner in a CPA firm. His job is to provide understandable explanations of complex topics so his clients can make intelligent and useful decisions. He has included those explanations here so we can all benefit from his expertise and make those same decisions.

Faithful Finances 101: From the Poverty of Fear and Greed to the Riches of Spiritual Investing

Faithful Finances 101: From the Poverty of Fear and Greed to the Riches of Spiritual Investing Review

Now in paperback, this challenging and provocative book strips the veneer from the financial advice of some popular evangelical media celebrities and advocates a reintegrating of faith and finances.

Faithful Finances 101 is a first-person narrative by outspoken advocate of faith-based investing. A senior vice president of investments at Paine Webber before founding his own investment firm as "counsel to ethical and spiritual investors," Gary Moore warns that much of the economic advice emanating from some popular and influential evangelical authors and speakers is based on scare tactics and distortions of what the Bible has to say about finances. He draws on fifty years of studying the Bible, politics, and economics, and presents insights for those who want to be faithful in their finances—to use 100 percent of the time, talent, and treasure with which they have been entrusted for the glory of God as well as for the benefit of others and themselves, and not just give 10 percent of their incomes to the church.

"Many financial gurus are ignorant of spiritual matters. Many spiritual leaders are ignorant of financial matters. In a rare blend, Gary Moore brings together proven financial expertise with mature spiritual insights. This book is a must read for those who care about managing their finances faithfully." —David W. Miller, PhD, Yale Center for Faith and Culture, Yale Divinity School

"The book is hard-hitting, thought-provoking, and intellectually challenging, offering a Christian view of macroeconomics rather than a mere how-to guide for personal finance." —Publishers Weekly
